We are going to watch the anime called My Neighbours the Yamadas. It's an older anime from 1999 but it has lots of Japanese culture for us to talk about and it also uses the family words we are learning this term.
Part 1 - Family Introduction
There are some comparisons we can make between Australian culture and Japanese culture in this first part of the anime.
Firstly, we saw images of Nonoko's parent's wedding. Did you notice the clothes they wore?
They wore traditional Shinto wedding attire instead of the wedding dress and suit we are used to seeing brides and grooms wear here.
Secondly, when it was time for the Yamadas to have children the anime shows the different ideas about where our culture and Japanese culture say children come from.
Part 2 - A Family Torn Apart
Part 3 and 4 - Domestic Goddess and Marriage Yamada Style
What differences do you notice about a Japanese clothesline and a typical Australian one?
What does the お母さん do before she’s able to leave the house?
What do you notice about the doorway to the kitchen?
How does the family decide who makes the tea?
What do you notice about the table in the living room?
The subtitles translate it as “Honey Honey” but what does the father actually say?
