Valentines Day and White Day バレンタインデー と ホワイトデー

On Valentine’s Day (February 14), only girls and women are expected to give gifts of chocolate to boys and men. Men do not traditionally give gifts on this day. Women give special hand-made chocolates to their boyfriends, husbands or partners, but also give less expensive chocolates and sweets to other men they know (e.g. classmates, co-workers).

One month later (March 14), Japan celebrates White Day. On this day boys and men reciprocate the Valentine’s Day chocolates they received by giving a gift to each girl or woman who gave them a gift. White Day was created in 1978 by the National Confectionery Industry Association in Japan. It was clearly designed with the aim to boost chocolate sales.
